Currently all the blinds of the world that want to go sailing are accompanied by other sailors. Some Sail Championship are organised in this way. Consequently those who command on board during a regatta and who impart the orders are the sighted ones, independently from the role that the same have or can have on board according to the rules of the regatta. At this point arrives the Homerus project that simply says: “the sighted persons should disembark because the blinds too are able to sail alone. It may seem paradoxical or unbelievable, but it is a reality and 120 Italian blinds in 6 years have learned to govern the boats on their own and some has also become ship owners. The true revolution created by Homerus is to turn the eternal accompanied into companions. The blind, except of walking in the street with the white stick, is always accompanied: - when he/she practises ski, - when he/she practises cycling, - when he/she practises running, etc. etc. Homerus does not simply say to the blinds: “Go alone without companion”, but it supplies them with a mean of locomotion. This is the revolution: for the first time in the history of humanity a blind guides a mean of locomotion, he/she buys it and then he/she invites his/her sighted friends to sail with him/her. And to those people answering that they aren’t able to sail, he/she answers with a pinch of pride: “It is not important. You come with me and, if asked, you will tell me what you see. I will care about the sailboat.” And so it happens that the eternal accompanied becomes a guide! The challenge is so great and spurring that everybody wants to learn. It is only when his heart trembles that the man feels to be great. We really win only when we fear to lose. Strong spurs and strong motivations let the man run toward unbelievable goals. But this is only the first step for Homerus and his blinds. The second step is to enjoy participating in the regattas. It is obvious that also the blinds of Homerus participate in regattas accompanied by other sailors, as the whole rest of the world currently does, but it is not so obvious that they do match-races in absolute autonomy. We simplify the explanation hypothesizing a night regatta between sighted people without any tools of navigation (to exception of the compass), as prescribed in the regatta rules of the VII class IOR - in which I have won two world championships.
The area has been chosen by the organizers since deprived of obstacles. The sailor knows that sooner or later sailing on bowline in the area between the two lay-lines – he/she will see will see the flashing bowline buoy. And if this buoy were acoustic why should a blind sailor not be able to reach it and to circumnavigate it? And the same is also worth for the buoys of departure and arrival on a baton course. Then, an acoustic tool is installed on both boats doing the regatta and it signals, with different sounds, the edge on which each boat is, i.e. if the walls are right or left hand. Every boat therefore knows the position of the adversary and if the sounds are the same they are sailing with the same walls, while if they are different their courses will be convergent or divergent. Everybody is able to know the own position on the field and the relative position of the antagonist. In 2003 (finally) we will prepare of ATNA (Alessandro's Talking Navigation Aid), at our disposal, a speaking tool that – besides answering to all the nautical questions - automatically signals the approaching of obstacles. With this tool Homerus will take the third step that is high navigation. But this is another matter. Currently those who have tried the system Homerus are Italian, Australian, English, French, Irish (from Northern Ireland), Japanese and American (from Florida) sailors.
