ATNA is an electronic satellite talking device meant for sailing boats and it gives blind people the opportunity of sailing by themselves.
The only restriction is caused by navigation rules where sailing has no write of way (entrance of harbours, chanals, etc.).
Atna can give all GPS information, even if these have been restricted as follows:
SOS: Latitude and Longitude (geografic point)
Waypoint memory: 99 waypoints can be stored and recalled at any time.
Refugee harbours: 9 refugee harbours can be stored and recalled at any time
Course: 9 courses can be stored. Each one has its own intermediate waypoints
Goto: with this push-button, you can tell the device where you want to go by choosing one of the 99 waypoints stored.
Mob: Man Over Board. With this push-button you can memorize immediately your geografic co-ordinates. This push-button is useful also to memorize at any time the geografic point where you are, for future waypoints, drawing an inversion of courses, addictions, cancellation, modifications.
SIMULATOR
ATNA is a device of movement and does not work if it stand still.
By the way, with the simulator you can practice from your own arm-chair.
EXCHANGE OF INFORMATION WITH A PC
It is easier to use a PC to draw courses, store waypoints, etc. Pc memory is much bigger than the one of a mobile-device.
ATNA will be connected to a PC so that only the limited area where you are sailing will be operating, and you can let in the PC all other information not needed (other navigation areas, etc.).
CONNECTION TO A PLOTTER
REPEAT
We can ask to repeat the information and change timing and frequence.
If we ask to repeat frequently the angle of approcing to the drawn course, we can easly correct any mistake and eventually change our position in relation to the wind.
ATNA provides also emergency advices in relation of fixed obstacles: rocks, islands, coasts, marks, shallow water, navigation restricted areas and, in a near future, emergency advices in relation of moving obstacles.
Advice, timing and angle of possible collision (starboard or port). Moreover, before a course change, it is possible to examine the starboard or the port area, to make sure that they are danger free. For sure ATNA is a mobile device, and it can easely be moved from a boat to another, giving the owner the option to charter a boat anywhere.
HOW TO USE ATNA
If you want to know the course to reach your way point (previously stored):
Push button N° 1 and the device will tell you: “Way point n°1 - 5° straboard - 20 minutes”. We know that at the same speed we will reach our waypoint in 20 minutes just by changing our course to starboard 5°.
But which is the exact direction of our boat?
By pushing push-button n°2 ATNA will tell us: “Course 140°. Our waypoint is 5° starboard to 140” 140° + 5° = 145°. As simple as that!
If we do not want (or cannot) change our course we can carry on and ask later. The position of waypoint will change and so the information. For instance: waypoint 90° starboard, course 140°
Assuming to be close hauled, by tacking we will be heading 230°, exactly in the direction of our waypoint in the time ATNA will tell us.
We can also set the device so that it can repeat the information we need at regular intervals.
Fixed obstacles approching will be automatically announced by the device that will tell us: “Island. 20° port - 35 minutes”.
Knowing our course and our waypoint, we will take action to avoid the obstacle. The same applies to mobile obstacles, but in this case we should take immediate action to avoid collision.
Pushing twice push-button waypoint for harbour and marks.
